How To Convert Your Nice Boss Into A Horrible Boss

Does your boss recognize and reward your duties and efforts?

Does your superior have your back?

Is he/she considerate and understanding towards you?

If the answer to the questions above is a ‘yes’– then it’s safe to say you are at the right place but more frequently than not- we find ourselves ‘stuck’ with the wrong organization or rather a horrible boss.

It’s ironic how one may rub off against his/her manager in a wrong way without having a slightest clue or perhaps somehow attracting the wrong situations at the wrong time and making those scenarios worst with ‘not-so-smart’ responses or actions.

How To Convert Your Nice Boss Into A Horrible Boss

Let’s have a look at how an individual holds the power of converting a nice boss into a horrible one by the virtue of their own smartness (read: miscalculated humor, acting hastily or uttering words/statements without thinking twice!)

1) Surprise Him/Her Every Now And Then!

Surprises in a corporate world are interpreted and ‘treated’ a tad bit differently than surprises at a personal level.

Nobody likes to look uninformed, unaware or bad in front of their bosses- your boss is no different!

What better way to get off at a wrong footing with your boss by keeping him/her ‘out of the information loop’ and catching them unprepared at an important meeting or in a room full of people.

Ta-daa- here goes your rapport out of the window!

2) I Know Better Attitude

As millennials, patience may not be a virtue we may necessarily be blessed with and somehow ‘I know better’ or maybe ‘I Know It All’ attitude seems to come naturally to us.

Struggling to focus on what the boss has to say and jumping at every chance to contribute, contradict and challenge his/her opinion is enough to earn you a top spot on the boss’s ‘hit list’.

3) Play the Blame Game

What’s more impressive than never admitting your mistakes and putting your foot down with a firm belief that ‘I am NEVER WRONG’ and it is always someone else’s fault?

Irk your boss by demonstrating that you enjoy playing the blame game and would absolutely NOT learn from your mistakes.

4) What Deadlines?

Deadlines are for people who don’t have any work, my plate is FULL!

Try saying this repeatedly to your boss each time an assignment comes your way to see the ‘results’ it will yield (warning: results may not be so pleasant).

This is an absolute winner for creating an enemy out of your boss: casual, laid back attitude with zero regard for deliverables, timelines and discipline, topped with lame excuses.

Horrible Boss

5) Gossip Queen!

Be the Grapevine leader!

Earn yourself this reputation and get your boss to trust you even more (NOT!)

By indulging in constant chit-chatting and gossip on people, colleagues and organizational politics- basically everything that doesn’t carry any value; you have established yourself as a person with a wagging tongue but no brains or depth.

Office Gossip Queen

6) Punctuality

Mess with probably the biggest pet peeve your boss may have by coming in late and taking off early from work.

Of course, it’s understandable your boss should know you are a night owl and waking up on time is not an option hence you should be ‘accommodated’ right?

7) Lunching Out with Friends

You are a people’s person who loves to go out for lunches and once you are out, there is no coming back.

Yes! This is an ideal way to dance on the last nerve of your superior.

Extended lunches (past the lunch hour) are an ideal way to have fun and test your boss’s patience at the same time.

8) Early leaves without Approvals

‘Oh! It’s a last minute thing, very urgent, I need to leave ASAP’ and off you go without taking an approval from your manager for leaving early.

Your rationale: When you don’t need approval to stay late then why do you need approval to leave early?

Such traits and mindset would simply reinforce your image as a ‘professional’ with your manager (lol).

9) Not being a team player

Bring your team mates down, show zero team-spirit and unwillingness for group assignments and voila!

Your boss will recognize your potential as an ‘individual contributor’ instead (read: no manager wants a toxic, self-centered and tunnel-visioned employee in their function)

10) There are other days than Friday

What better than exploiting your boss’s leniency for your own style and comfort?

Casual outfits are usually limited to Friday’s however, if you choose to treat every day as a ‘Fri-yay’ then do so at your own risk!

The list above is a brief snapshot of what can easily displease your boss and get you on the wrong side of his/her books.

Showing persistence by repeatedly making the same mistakes again and NEVER learning from them would result in the inevitable: your golden corporate career will be over before you know it!
